Text

Calculus 7E by James Stewart

Overview

We plan to cover Chapters 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, and 12. This includes techniques of integration, applications, exponentials and logarithms, sequences and series, and polar coordinates. The pace will be roughly one section per lecture (MWF). The TR discussion sections will be devoted mostly to examples, questions and answers, and discussing homework. Homework will be due every Thursday, and there will be quizzes on Thursdays which cover the material of the homework. The lowest two quiz scores will be dropped.

Grades

10% Homework
10% Quizzes (lowest 2 quiz scores will be dropped)
18% Exam 1
18% Exam 2
18% Exam 3
26% Final Exam

Grading Policy

All problems on graded assignments will be worth 3 points. Your score will be determined by how much progress you make towards a complete, correct solution, and how well you explain your solution. In particular, you must show your work and not make unexplained leaps of logic or skip significant steps. Here is a breakdown of the score levels: You should write your solutions in a neat, step-by-step, orderly way. Basically, they should be clear enough that another student reading your solution would be able to follow each step and understand how the solution works. You don't need to write words (although sometimes a word or two can be helpful), but instead focus on using mathematical language and symbols to correctly express how your solution goes. Random non-applicable or incorrect formulas and calculations will also be penalized and may result in moving down the grade scale.

Homework: There are two types of homework problems: graded problems and additional problems. You should do all of the problems, but only hand in the graded problems.

Quiz: The weekly 20 minute quiz will always cover the same sections as the homework due that week. Moreover, the quiz will often (but not always) consist of problems from the ungraded homework assignment. If you know how to do all of the homework problems on your own you will be prepared for the quiz.

Your final letter grade will be based on a curve (to be determined). Homework, quizzes, and exams will be weighted as mentioned above in the Grades section.

Exam Dates

Exam 1: Friday 9/25, Exam 1 solutions
Exam 2: Monday 10/26, Exam 2 solutions
Exam 3: Friday 12/4, Exam 3 solutions
Final Exam: Friday Dec 18, 4:30-6:30, PHSC 0323 (the usual room)
An index card of formulas will be allowed on the exams. Up to 4 inch by 6 inch and handwritten only, front and back is okay. Calculators will also be allowed. This sheet of formulas will also be provided on all the exams.

Missed work policy

No late homework will be accepted. No makeup exams or quizzes, except in the case of excused absence (illness with doctor's note, etc.).

Calculators

Calculators are allowed on homework, quizzes and exams but will generally not be needed.

Academic misconduct statement

All cases of suspected academic misconduct will be referred to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences for prosecution under the University’s Academic Misconduct Code. The penalties can be quite severe. Don’t do it! For more details on the University’s policies concerning academic misconduct consult http://www.ou.edu/integrity/.

For information on your rights to appeal charges of academic misconduct consult http://www.ou.edu/integrity/students_guide.html.

Students are also bound by the provisions of the OU Student Code, which can be found at http://judicial.ou.edu/content/view/27/32/.

Students with disabilities

The University of Oklahoma is committed to providing reasonable accommodation for all students with disabilities. Students with disabilities who require accommodations in this course are requested to speak with the instructor as early in the semester as possible. Students with disabilities must be registered with the Office of Disability Services prior to receiving accommodations in this course. The Office of Disability Services is located in Goddard Health Center, Suite 166: phone 405–325–3852 or TDD (only) 405–325–4173.

Extra Help

In addition to my office hours, you can also get help in the Math Center.

The Most Important Key to Success in Math Classes

The only way to learn math is to do problems. I cannot stress enough how important it is to do all of the homework problems, and additional problems if you need more practice. It is okay to work with others, but if you do, make sure that you know how to do the problems on your own. This may mean redoing the problems on your own to make sure you understand. If you have good homework scores but bad quiz and exam scores then you are probably not doing homework in the best way. Please come talk to me so we come up with a plan to correct things.

Hand in only the graded problems.
