The syllabus for this course can be found here.. Note that the date for Midterm II has changed to Wednesday, March 28 at 8:30-9:50!.

Midterms

Answers for the first midterm are available here. Note that problem 1d is different from the actual exam. Answers for the second midterm are available here.

Note: you are allowed to use calculators and graphing software for all of these problems.

Written HW I due Jan 18

1.3 Problem 27; 1.6 Problems 22, 25

Extra Credit Problems:

1)Suppose that f is a one-to-one function with domain (-∞,∞) and range [0,∞). What is the domain and range of the inverse of f?

2)(Tricky) Draw a graph of x^(1/2). Does it have an inverse? If so, what is it?

Written HW II due Jan 25

1.5 Problem 26; 2.3 Problems 31, 33

Written HW III due Feb 1

2.5 Problem 54; 2.7 Problems 2,3,24

Extra Credit Problem

A rock is thrown upwards on planet Mars with a velocity of 10 miles per second, and its height after t seconds is given by H(t)=10t-2t^2. At what velocity will the rock hit the surface? (Please don't detach your handout sheet for this problem, as you have useful notes on the other side).

Written HW IV due Feb 8

3.1 Problem 56; 3.2 Problem 37

Demonstrate the quotient rule in a similar way to which we demonstrated the product rule in class. Start with a rectangle of height f(x) and length 1/g(x), and consider how its area changes as x increases to x+ Δx. (This is a hard problem, and I recommend that you get started early so you have time to ask me or the TA questions if you get stuck.)
