Math 2423 (Calculus II)

Fall 2014

The American persimmon (Diospyros virginiana) grows wild throughout the southeast United States. You can find quite a few persimmon trees in the woods east of Norman. The fruits are sweet and tasty when fully soft and ripe, but are bitter and astringent when unripe. So take just a little taste first to check! Folklore has it that a bumper crop of persimmons in the fall presages a hard winter. If that's true, then this winter will probably be pretty hard, since the persimmon trees in our neighborhood were loaded with fruit this fall. This image taken from the Chickasaw Nation webpage.

Here is a link you can follow to sign up to participate in the Calculus study: http://www.supersaas.com/schedule/Macbeth/Calculus_training_media_study. As mentioned in class, participants in this study will get to drop an extra homework grade, besides the one that I am already dropping.
In the spring of 2010 the New York Times ran an interesting set of columns by Steven Strogatz introducing readers to some mathematical topics, including calculus. If you run up against the Times' limit of ten free articles per month, you can usually reach the articles anyway by searching for them by name on Google with "Strogatz" added. For example, Google "Take it to the limit Strogatz".
You can find a brief introduction to planimeters (mechanical devices for measuring areas of regions in the plane) at the Wikipedia article on planimeters, along with links to more complete discussion. In particular, there is a link to Robert Foote's planimeter pages where you can find a geometric explanation of how planimeters work.
