ANDY R. MAGID

EDUCATION

Andy Magid received the Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics, with Distinction in General Scholarship and the Honors Program Completed in the Major with Distinction, from the University of California at Berkeley in 1966. He received the Ph.D. degree in Mathematics from Northwestern University in 1969. His thesis, on Galois theory of Commutative Rings, was supervised by Daniel Zelinsky. He was valedictorian of the class of 1962, Chickasha High School, Chickasha Oklahoma.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Andy Magid was in the Mathematics Department of the University of Oklahoma since 1972 to 2012. He served as Assistant Professor from 1972 to 1974, as Associate Professor from 1974 to 1977, and as Professor 1977-2012. In 1989, he was named George Lynn Cross Research Professor of Mathematics. Currently he is George Lynn Cross Professor of Mathematics Emeritus. Previously, he was a J. F. Ritt Assistant Professor at Columbia University from 1969 to 1972. He has been a Visiting Associate Professor of Mathematics at the University of Illinois and a Visiting Professor of Mathematics at the University of Virginia, the University of California at Berkeley, the Hebrew University in Jerusalem Israel and Bar-Ilan University in Ramat Gan, Israel. He has been Visiting Professor and Lady Davis Fellow at the Technion.

INDUSTRIAL EXPERIENCE

Andy Magid was an employee of the Communications Research Division of the Institute for Defense Analyses in Princeton New Jersey ( summer of 1987) and was subsequently a consultant for them.

RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

Andy Magid is the author of four books, about 90 research papers, (co) author of a book on Mathematics education, (co)editor of four volumes of conference proceedings and has supervised 10 doctoral dissertations in Mathematics. His primary research interests are in abstract algebra, especially in the theory of algebraic groups, discrete groups, and the applications of the former in the study of the representation theory of the latter, and in Galois theory of rings and differential Galois theory of fields.

FUNDING

Andy Magid received funding support for his research from the National Science Foundation from 1970 to 1989 and 2000 to 2002. In addition, he has been supported by the National Security Agency Mathematics Research Program 1987-1989 (R. Resco, co-principal investigator) and 1990-1999, by National Science Foundation Scientific Computing Research Equipment Grants in 1987 (with B. Gordon, S. Gutman, K. Lee and W. Ray) and 1990 (with E. Cline, R. Dipper, and B. Gordon), by the United States-Israel Binational Science Foundation 1982-1984 and 1985-1988 (with A. Lubotzky), and 1990-1993 (with A. Mann) by a National Science Foundation Regional Conference Grant in 1989, and by an National Science Foundation US-Belarus Joint Workshop Grant in 1992.

He directed a project on 21st Century Mathematics Classrooms funded by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education in 1990-1992, and directed the University of Oklahoma site for the Oklahoma Collaborative for Excellence in Teacher Preparation funded by the National Science Foundation 1996-2000.
